Residential lighting, poles, mailboxes and address plates

+ How to choose the right luminaire for my house?

Both aesthetics and functionality must be taken into account when looking for outdoor lighting. Snoc offers a large selection of decorative outdoor luminaires to choose from according to the style of your residence. Each collection offers different mounting configurations such as upward or downward wall-mount, chain mount, pole mount or pole mounted luminaire assembly. Click on Documents to download our different catalogs and choose the right collection and application and the proper size of the luminaire.

+ What is the length of the chain that comes with chain-mounted luminaires?

Our chain-mounted luminaires come with a 7-inch (17 cm) long chain. Longer chain is available upon request at additional charge.

+ How do I determine the height of a pole?

A pole-mounted luminaire will have a circle of light on the ground of 5 times its height. Depending on lamp wattage, the intensity of light will vary within this diameter, but the light will not reach further away.

+ Should I prefer an aluminum or a steel pole?

Aluminum doesn’t rust and it has an excellent corrosion resistance. Since our luminaires are made of aluminum, choosing an aluminum pole will assure you that the pole will stay looking good as long as the luminaires without needing repainting.

+ When installing a pole, is it preferable to use a Sonotube filled with concrete or a steel pile?

Installing a pole using a Sonotube filled with concrete is different from using a steel pile. However, it is good to know that a steel pile could lead to an unstable installation. Also, if there is contact between the aluminum pole base and the steel pile, it increases the risk of paint peeling. So it is preferable to use a concrete base for a solid and durable installation.

+ What are the proper diameter and depth for the Sonotube form?

The Sonotube form diameter should exceed the pole anchor circle by at least 3 inches (7.6 cm). Depthwise, you have to determine the depth of the frost line in your area and make sure to go below the frost line.

+ How many digits can I have on an address plate? What is the size of the digits?

The number of digits and their size will depend on the size of address plate selected.

+ Is the transformer included with a 12V address plate?

The transformer is not included with a low voltage address plate. Very often, connections are made on the electric doorbell transformer.

Landscape lighting

+ Should I choose a 12V or a 120V landscape lighting system?

A 12V low voltage system is much easier to install and it requires the use of a transformer which is sold separately. As for the 120V system, we recommend that the installation be made by an electrician in order to comply with the requirements of applicable electrical codes.

+ How many luminaires can I install on a same circuit?

With a 120V system, you should not exceed the capacity of the breaker protecting the electrical outlet. With a 12V system, you should not exceed the transformer capacity. It is also recommended to keep an approximate 10% margin to compensate for the lost of current on the circuit and to extend the life of the transformer. For example, the total cumulative wattage of all luminaires connected to a 100-watt transformer should not exceed 90 watts.

+ Can I use Snoc transformers indoors?

Our transformers can be used for indoor or outdoor applications. However, when buying a transformer for an indoor application, choose one without a photocell.

+ Which transformer do you recommend?

In order to choose the appropriate transformer, you have to know how many luminaires are to be installed on the circuit and the wattage of each luminaire. Calculate the total wattage, add 50% for possible future additions, and you will have the total required capacity for your transformer.

+ Can I connect LED and incandescent landscape lighting luminaires on the same transformer?

Our LED and incandescent landscape lighting luminaires can be part of the same lighting system and can be connected to the same transformer. However, make sure not to exceed the transformer capacity.

+ Among Snoc landscape lighting luminaires, which ones are suitable for under water applications?

Snoc offers 2 models of submersible luminaires: 0585 LV LD8 and 0586 HGST.

+ Why are my landscape lighting luminaires not turning on?

1. Check that the transformer is connected and that there is power at the electric outlet.
2. Then, check that the transformer is in the ON position.
3. Check if the circuit breaker has tripped.
4. If the transformer is equipped with a photocell, it will not work in day light.
5. Check main cable connection at the terminal block.
6. Check luminaire light bulbs.

+ Why do my landscape lighting luminaires stay on all the time?

The problem is probably with the timer on the transformer not being programmed correctly. If the transformer is equipped with a photocell, make sure the transformer is installed in a place where there is enough light to turn the lights off during day time.

+ Why are my landscape lighting luminaires located at the end of the circuit less bright than the ones located at the beginning of the circuit?

The voltage drop along the cable is usually the reason why luminaires at the end of the run have a tendency to lose in intensity and brightness compared to the ones near the transformer. To reduce as much as possible the voltage drop: keep cable as short as possible or use more than one cable, use minimum 12-gauge cable, change luminaire bulbs to a lower wattage, use a transformer that is larger than the circuit total wattage.

+ Why is one of my landscape lighting luminaires not producing as much light as the others?

The light bulb may not be making good contact with the socket or the connector on the main cable may not be installed correctly.

+ Why does the circuit-breaker that protects the transformer on my landscape lighting system trip after a few minutes of operation?

The circuit is probably overloaded. Reduce the total wattage on the circuit, either by removing one or more luminaires or by replacing fixture bulbs with ones that have a lower wattage, or use a larger transformer.

+ Why does the circuit-breaker protecting the transformer on my landscape lighting system trip when the system turns on?

There is probably a short at the end of the main cable or at the luminaire’s connection on the main cable.

LED lighting

+ What is LED lighting?

An LED, or a Light Emitting Diode, is an optoelectronic component that produces light when an electrical current is passed through it. Snoc luminaires feature an integrated LED lighting system consisting of a printed circuit board onto which a variable quantity of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are mounted.

+ Why choose an LED luminaire?

Snoc LED lighting has many advantages:
1. No more replacement bulbs to buy.
2. Exceptional LED lifetime. After 50,000 hours, LEDs will still be functioning at 70% of their initial brightness.
3. Important reduction in electricity consumption.
4. Significant reduction in light pollution, thanks to LED directional flux.
5. Instant start-up even at -40°C.
6. Shock resistance, LEDs being practically unbreakable.
7. Environmental protection. LEDs do not emit any measurable ultraviolet radiation and do not produce electromagnetic fields, they contain no gas and generate very little heat.

+ Do LED luminaires and incandescent luminaires produce the same type of illumination?

The type of illumination is more or less the same. The color temperature of our LED lighting systems being 3000K, the light produced is similar to the light produced by an incandescent light bulb whose color temperature is 2800K. However, Snoc LED lighting systems are mounted in the upper part of the luminaire. The light is directed downward, where it is needed, unlike traditional light sources which disperse the light in all directions.

+ What is the lifespan of LEDs used in Snoc LED luminaires?

LEDs that are part of our LED lighting system have an exceptional lifespan. After 50,000 hours, LEDs will still be functioning at 70% of their initial brightness.

+ Is there a choice of color temperature and intensity with Snoc LED luminaires?

The standard color temperature of our LED luminaires is 3000K. As for intensity, it varies according to the application, as well as the type or size of the luminaire selected. Refer to the description of each luminaire to see the possibilities that are offered.

+ Over the years, will there be a change in light color or intensity with the Snoc LED lighting system?

The color will not change over the years and after 50,000 hours the Snoc LED lighting system will still be functioning at 70% of its initial brightness.

+ What is the electricity consumption of Snoc LED luminaires?

The electricity consumption varies according to the LED lighting system installed. It can vary between 2 and 25 watts approximately.

+ Is it possible to use a dimmer with Snoc LED luminaires?

A certain number of our LED luminaires offer the possibility to use a dimmer. However, the dimmer must be designed for use with LED lighting system. For example, a Lutron DVCL-153P dimmer or an equivalent model can be used. Our 120V luminaires that are equipped with the following LED lighting systems: LD (The essentials) / LD8, LD10 and LD20 (without driver) can be used with a dimmer.

+ Can I install a timer on Snoc LED luminaires?

There is no problem in using a timer with Snoc LED luminaires.

+ Why is my LED luminaire equipped with a timer not functioning?

Some timers need a minimum load of 40 watts in order to function.

+ Why does my luminaire not have a ground wire?

The mounting hardware supplied with the luminaire includes a crossbar and a ground screw. The grounding is achieved through the crossbar into which is screwed the ground screw, and through the nipple or the studs and the aluminum structure of the luminaire. Make sure tough that a ground wire from the power supply is solidly attached under the ground screw provided with the crossbar. (When a ground wire is provided with the luminaire, make sure it is connected to the supply ground wire.)

+ How to wire a photocell on a pole?

1. Connect all the white wires together (supply, luminaire and photocell).
2. Connect the black wire from the power supply to the black wire on the photocell.
3. Connect the black luminaire wire to the red wire on the photocell.

Cleaning and maintenance

+ How often should I clean my luminaires?

Like any other product, luminaires need regular cleaning. You can, for example, clean them when you replace the bulbs or each spring after the snow is gone.

+ How do I clean my Snoc luminaires?

All you need is a clean soft cloth and mild soap. For the glass panels, you may use a normal glass cleaner. Make sure that the drain hole in the bottom is not blocked. Each time you clean your luminaires take the time to apply a lubricant (oil or grease) to screws that are in contact with aluminum to prevent oxidation that can occur over time due to weather conditions and to ensure easy disassembly.

+ What do I do if I cannot remove the screws that hold the top of the luminaire to the body?

Start by using a lubricant such as Jig-a-loo or WD-40 on the screws and let it stand for a few minutes. Then, unscrew them a little at a time. Be careful not to apply too much strength to avoid breaking them.
